The Pigment red 23 is one of Azo dye which is widely applied in the world for textile printing, aqueous printing ink, coating and coloring. It can access to water through industrial waste, sewage, leaching of soil and surface run off and so on, and It can cause harm to the growth, development and reproduction of aquatic creatures, or even a potential damage to human body health. However, the effects of the toxicity of Pigment red 23 on aquatic organisms have not been reported. Therefore, an exposure experiment should be made to study toxicity and biological toxicity mechanism of Pigment Red 23, so as to provide the basis for ecological risk and ecological toxicity evaluation, and contribute to the research and development of new varieties of dye in the future.In this paper, we studied the effects of Pigment red 23 on the Cyprinus carp, based on the theory of ecological toxicology. First, the median lethal concentration(LC50) of Pigment red 23 to the Cyprinus carp for 96 h were obtained using the acute toxicity test was 255.38 mg/L, then based on 96 h LC50, we setted up one control group and five treatments:1/16 LC50、1/8LC50、1/4 LC50、1/3 LC50、1/2 LC50 and exposed Cyprinus carp to these treatments for 1d, 3d, 5d, 7d and 9d respectively. gill, liver and muscles of Cyprinus carp were collected to determine the activities of Superoxide Dismutase(SOD), Malondialdehyde(MDA), and the content of Glutathione(GSH), the enzyme activities of Alkaline Phosphatase(AKP) and Acid Phosphatase(ACP), the activities Adenosine triphosphate(ATPaes) and Lactate dehydrogenase(LDH). The effects of Pigment red 23 on the dirty coefficient, Antioxidant defense system, Phosphatase and energy metabolism of Cyprinus carp was studied.The main conclusions as follows:1)the median lethal concentration(LC50) of Pigment red 23 to the Cyprinus carp for 96 h is 255.38 mg/L,It Belongs to medium toxicity.2) Pigment red 23 exercises a great influence on the dirty coefficient of Cyprinus carp,s gill and liver, Compared with the trend of dirty coefficient of the gill and liver,It was concluded that dirty coefficient in the liver were more sensitive than in the gill. The effects of Pigment Red 23 on dirty coefficient of Cyprinus carpio ’s gill and liver tend to be induced.3) The pollution stress on the antioxidant defense system in the gill,liver and muscles tend to be different. The results of the experiments show that the effects of Pigment Red 23 on T-SOD and GSH in the gill tend to be induced, whereas the pollution stress on MDA is the effect of inhibition-induction-inhibition. The effects of Pigment Red 23 on T-SOD and GSH in the liver tend to be induced, whereas the pollution stress on MDA is the effect of induction-inhibition. The effects of Pigment Red 23 on T-SOD in the muscles tend to be induced, whereas the pollution stress on MDA and GSH are the effect of induction- inhibition-induction and induction-inhibition.4) The pollution stress on the phosphatase in the gill,liver and muscles tend to be different. The results of the experiments show that the effects of Pigment Red 23 on gill tend to be opposite, The pollution stress on AKP is the effect of induction-inhibition-induction, whereas the pollution stress on ACP is the effect of inhibition-induction- inhibition. The effects of Pigment Red 23 on Cyprinus carpio ’s liver tend to be inhibited. In the Cyprinus carpio ’s muscles, The pollution stress on AKP is the effect of induction-inhibition, whereas the pollution stress on ACP is the effect of inhibition-induction-inhibition. In summary, the present study demonstrated that ACP and AKP may imply a significant role in resisting the toxic effects of Azo dye.5) The pollution stress on the energy metabolism in the gill, liver and muscles tend to be different. The results of the experiments show that the effects of Pigment Red 23 on ATPaes in the gill and muscles tend to be induced, whereas the pollution stress in the liver is the effect of induction- inhibition. The effects of Pigment Red 23 on LDH in the gill, liver and muscles tend to be induced.
