Analasis Of The Cultural Communication Function Of Chinese Character Dictation Contest

Chinese Character Dictation Contest, co-sponsored by China Central Television (CCTV) and State Language Work Committee, broadcast simultaneously on CCTV-1and CCTV-10in the summer of2013, set off a nationwide wave of discussion about Chinese character writing and cultural inheritance among Chinese of different ages and occupations. In the era of "amusing ourselves to death", Chinese Character Dictation Contest with its simple game flow, monotonous visual presentation, single game rules as well as ordinary high school contestants, surpassed many hit music talent shows in the same period. Chinese Character Dictation Contest on the one hand let the audience enjoy the charm of Chinese character writing; on the other hand it also achieved the purpose of cultural heritance and transmission of civilization, and inheritance of values of being keen on Chinese characters and Chinese traditional culture.This thesis attempts to employ the methodology of content analysis and qualitative analysis to elaborate the cultural transmission function of Chinese Character Dictation Contest in terms of its cultural connotations, the inheritance and impact of Chinese characters on Chinese civilization in the perspective of cultural transmission. It combs the contents of the whole contest, analyzes its environmental impact, transmission concept, dissemination contents, communication mechanism, as well as propagation effect in the process of cultural transmission, reflects on the cultural transmission in the new media environment, and explores the important mission of television programs to play a role in spreading culture in the context of upgraded version of cutback on TV entertainment. In this way, it aims to realize the inheritance of Chinese culture, promote the Chinese television media to choose the better way of cultural communication and to build the long-term mechanism so that it can promote the innovative television programs and sustainable development of Chinese cultural communication. This thesis consists of four parts. Chapter One is the introduction of the study, which mainly expounds the different academic perspectives, attitudes and paradigms methods of well-know schools of mass cultural communication in history in order to provide macroscopic vision, thinking pattern and theoretical basis for the study. It also indicates the theoretical and practical significance of television media to achieve cultural communication by elaborating the explorations of scholars of communication on television media, and social problems. Chapter Two illustrates the challenge on cultural transmission faced by Chinese Character Dictation Contest by exploring the impact of excessive entertainment of television program, and media environment on the Chinese cultural inheritance. Chapter Three conducts specific analysis on the function of cultural transmission of Chinese Character Dictation Contest in terms of transmission concept, contents, media, effect, mechanism and strategy, and then it further analyzes the ways of constructing cultural transmission force and realizing the function of cultural transmission. Chapter Four analyzes the challenge faced by the television program in the context of globalization and informatization, and proposes the ways of taking new media environment to strengthen the indigenous innovation.
