In recent years, with the progress of the miniaturization and integration of antenna, theresearch of on-chip antenna attracted more and more people’s attention. Due to the advantages oflow cost and ease to mass production, antenna based on the CMOS technology has become a hot ofindustry research. In addition, Europe, Japan, America and other countries have divided about7GHz spectrum resources near60GHz. So60GHz short-range wireless transmission has become ahot research also has a wide range of applications such as: high-definition uncompressed videostreams,3D wireless HD games and fast transfer of large files.The paper focuses on the research and design of60GHz chip antenna which based on standardCMOS process. Silicon acts as substrate in the standard CMOS process. However, the lowresistivity (10Ω·cm) and the low electron mobility of silicon has a great impact on the radiance ofantenna. These resulted in a lower gain and radiation efficiency of the antenna, which can not meetthe technical requirements of short-range wireless communications. The AMC structure ischaracterized by a same reflection phase with the incident wave, which is analogous to the perfectmagnetic conductor. AMC structure is loaded periodic between the antenna and the silicon substrate.The antenna is designed in M6layer and AMC structure is designed in M1layer of the standardCMOS process. Through the reasonable design of the shape, size, spacing and arrangement withAMC structure can effectively improve the performances (gain、radiant efficiency and so on) of theantenna. After simulation and optimization with three-dimensional electromagnetic simulationsoftware Ansoft HFSS based on finite element method. When a=107um and g=45um, the reflectionphase at60GHz is0o, and the reflection phase band-gap completely covered7GHz band near60GHz. By comparing the different arrangement of the AMC structure unit, when increases thenumber of AMC unit in the direction of current flow (3×6,3×7,3×8), the gain and radiationefficiency of antenna is greatly improved; when increases the number of AMC unit in the verticaldirection of current flow (3×6,4×6,5×6), the radiation efficiency and gain of the antennachanges slowly.The main work and the basic structure is as follows: First, the paper introduces the researchbackground, present situation and development trend of60GHz chip antenna; then introduces thedesign principle of antenna and AMC structure and how to realize the reflection phasecharacteristics of AMC structure. And the period-loaded AMC have the influence on antenna.Finally, some conclusion is made by simulating and comparing of the on-chip antenna performance with different arrangement of AMC structure.
