Cognitive radio technology is a key mean to solve the lack of spectrum resources, andit has become one of the focuses in the wireless communication. The research of cognitiveradio is mainly focused on physical level and MAC (Media Access Control) level.Corresponding technologies include spectrum sensing, spectral analysis, spectrum decisionand spectrum sharing. However, the research of routing protocols in cognitive radionetworks is just getting start. Dynamic spectrum resources in cognitive radio networkshave brought many new problems to design routing protocols in cognitive radio networks. So it is very necessary to design routing protocols which apply to cognitive radio networks. This paper mainly studies the routing protocol in the cognitive radio ad hoc (C-Ad Hoc)networks. The work contents and innovation points are as follows:1) Based on the research achievements of routing algorithm in C-Ad Hoc networksdomestic and overseas, a new research idea is proposed.2) According to the characteristics of C-Ad Hoc networks, the thesis chooses AODVprotocol as research basis. A preparation of studying the control packet format and routingestablishment and maintenance processes in AODV protocol is made. Then, consideringthe difficulties in designing routing algorithm for C-Ad Hoc networks, standards whichshould be referred when designing the new routing algorithm is proposed.3) By modifying and supplementing AODV protocol in routing table and controlpacket formats, a new routing protocol named Cognitive Ad Hoc On Demand Vector(C-AODV) protocol for C-Ad Hoc networks is proposed. It can combine spectrummanagement and path selection without common control channel.4) This thesis chooses OPNET to model the work scenario and develop the routingalgorithm. The performance of C-AODV is tested and analyzed by taking average end toend delay as an indicator.5) In the end, the summary of the thesis and some recommendations for futureresearches were given. In general, the thesis firstly give a routing scheme for cognitive radio ad hocnetworks in theory, then choose OPNET to design proper cognitive nodes and model C-AdHoc networks, at last, the newly designed routing algorithm is implemented in the networkmodel. The simulating results show that the new C-AODV routing algorithm is feasibleand performs well.
