Nowadays, more and more Chinese pirvately owned enterpirses like Huawei, Haier,Lenovo, Geely are starting their international business. In the process of internationalexpansion, they encountered setbacks and trade barriers. Partly these barirers areeconomic pressures; another part comes from political considerations. Mainstreammedia in the US and UK have attributed large portion of reports to China’s privateenterprises. These reports, to some degree, construct the image of Chinese pirvate’enterprise abroad. Thats the reason behind why this research attempts to study thesemedia reports about China’s privately owned enterprises.Taking Huawei Company as an example, this paper conducted a content analysis onBritish and American mainstream media in order to monit,or Huaweis image in thistwo mainstream financial newspapers. All the news samples, selected from leadingf“inancial newspaper The Wall St”reet Journal and “The Financial Ti”mes, will becarefully examined and decoded under the construction of coding sheets. The datathat came from the decoding will be imported into and analyzed by SPSS software soas to monitor the media agenda setting, news framings as well as Huawei’s mediaimage in these two newspapers. In the mean time, this research will compare and findout the differences in agenda setting between the two newspapers.Through Huawei case study, this paper hopes to provide inspiration for Chinesemulti-national pirvately owned enterpirses. As a pioneer for Chinese multi-national’privately owned enterprises, Huaweis case represents both typicality and universality, and will give traces of the stereotyped media image of Chinese multi-nationalprivately owned enterprises as well as of the predicaments and challenges they willencounter. This research aims at helping China’s privately owned enterprises to betterunderstanding themselves and the barriers they are going to encounter. Only then, they will be able to better adjust their communication strategies and better shape theirown images abroad.
