With the increase of the urban population and motor vehicles following serials of trafficproblems, such as traffic jam, traffic accidents, environmental pollution, and so on. These notonly extend the time people spend on the road, also lead to the lower working efficiency.Therefore, it is imperative to solve the traffic problems. A large number of facts shown, tosolve the urban traffic problems, not only improving the construction of transportinfrastructure, but also utilizing intelligent traffic management systems and informationservices, in order to improve the level of traffic management.Management is a branch of the system, so is to traffic system. Intelligent trafficmanagement system, which is combined with information and transportation system, is animportant part of intelligent transportation system. Advanced traffic management system(ATMS) is supported by smart technology, integrated a series of management systems withefficient, safe and reliable, economical and practical. ATMS has characteristics ofstandardized, humane and systematic. ATMS is the inevitable trend and direction of roadtraffic management and long-term development.Intelligent traffic management system,which combined with modern traffic engineeringtheory, collecting and transmitting real-time traffic data and information valuable totravelers,by using of computers, electronics, communications and other technologies. Finally,the aims of easing traffic congestion, reducing environmental pollution, saving energy,improving driver’s safety and driving comfortably could be achieved. Currently, the mostcommon form ATMS used in the world is a traffic management system, which is based ontraffic control center. ATMS connects isolated subsystems together through the computernetwork platform.In this article, firstly, the current development and research status of the foreign anddomestic ATMS are analyzed and discussed; then, analyzes the components, sub-systems andthe main technology of urban intelligent traffic management system. Finally, on the basis ofthe research of different cities’ ATMS, China’s condition and the level of ITS, our teamdesigns ATMS to meet the need of Hohhot. The subsystem of bus rapid transit system ofmanagement system has been implemented. This paper has a practical significance and research value to solve the traffic problems of China.
