Phase noise is a significant indicator to describe the stability of the signalfrequency, and it is also a pivotal content of signal analysis and testing. Phase noisemeasurement is a significant research issue of electronic equipment measurementtechnique in the field of communication and radar, etc. However, there is no pulsesignal phase noise measurement instrument specific to radar equipment in domestic atpresent. This paper is originated from a scientific research project named “Phase NoiseMeasurement Technique Based on the Broadband Microwave and Millimeter-WaveSignal”. First of all, the basic concept of phase noise and several common testingmethods are introduced. This paper mainly focused on the significant techniques onfrequency-domain measurement of microwave and millimeter-wave pulse signal phasenoise. Based on the randomized characteristic of phase noise, the research contains thephase noise extraction method based on phase demodulation method; the designmentand implement of the RF phase noise extraction hardware and phase noise spectrumestimation simulation. Giving signal-under-test a known frequency modulation wave, which is performed on the design circuit to check the function of phase demodulationmethod. With the phase noise measurement result measured directly by spectralanalyzer AV4036as a reference value, a comparison is made to verify the measurementprecision.Through the comparison between the phase noise measured by phasedemodulation method and the reference phase noise signal, it can be shown that thefunction of phase noise extraction system is good, the phase demodulation method isapplied completely and this system can extract and measure phase noise effectively.
