With the rapid development of Internet, enterprises and government depart-ments are under the pressure of dramatic data increasement. Traditional storage technology can not meet the needs of mass data storage, fault tolerance and advanced security in this digital age. Meanwhile, in consideration of storage cost, network storage technologies over IP are generally welcomed.NAS (network attached storage) is based on existing TCP/IP networks and has extensive supporting platforms. SAN (storage area network) was used to connect storage appliances and servers with fibre channel to form a specialized highspeed sub-network. ISCSI (Internet SCSI), one technology of IP-SAN, totally disengages from fibre channel and is complying to TCP/IP protocols, who constructs a bridge between NAS and SAN.In this paper, researchment and implementation of the two technologes, NAS and iSCSI, are presented. We developped a NAS system which have practical and market value, then applied iSCSI on it to realize the integration of NAS and SAN. The main work of this paper can be summarized as follows:1. Put forward an entire practical scheme of NAS system based on its hardware structure and software model with the file system residing in a compact DOM (disk on module) whose capacity is 128MB.2. Realize channel bonding of network cards to guarantee the robustness of network connection and optimize data transferring performance.3. Develop the device driver of a special RAID hardware controller used in our system, and design a web-based management software with several functional modules including log management, data backup management etc.4. Realize iSCSI technology by software method and extend the NAS system to a rudimentary SAN.5. Implement a system test to compare the performances of iSCSI, CIFS and NFS and to verify higher data transfering speed of iSCSI.
