Objective: Based on the concept and mechanism of sleep and insomnia of theChinese medicine，this essay analyses different performance forms of insomniacaused by disharmony of heart and kidney，and studies on the improving effectsof insomnia treatment by Chinese medicine．Methods: Firstly,the medicine principle of sleep occurrence is studied andthe mechanism and cause of insomnia elaborated by using literature analysis;secondly，a systemic theoretic study on harmony and disharmony of heart and kidneyis done by using literature analysis and induction，through generalizing peers’research results， refining methods and ways of heart and kidney communicationby summary and logic analysis，and thus resulting in dialectical therapy ofinsomnia treatment by heart and kidney communication．Result：Forthetreatmentofinsomniaarisingfromheartandkidneydisharmony，it develops therapies of direct treatment of heart and kidney communication，treatment from spleen and stomach and treatment from liver，and summarizes theorigins，applications and experimental tests of representative treatment formulasuch as Thai pills，coptis chinensis donkey-hide gelatin soup and King heartpills．Conclusion： In the treatment of insomnia， heart and kidney communicationcan not only supplement water，dilute fire and calm nerves，but also drain liver，smoothen central mechanism and readjust spirits，systemically reflecting thegeneral principle of the Chinese medicine：dialectical treatment and wholistictreatment． Thereby，heart and kidney communication therapy is the fundamentallaw to cure intractable insomnia．...
