BackgroundInternet addiction has been described as overuse of internet and developed as a serious social problem. Research found that internet addiction rate among college students in China is from1.62%to15.8%and medical students are proved to be high-risk group with the rate from4.5%to12.57%. According to investigation from the internet center, among those drop-out students, about1/3of them fail the exam and have to retake the course, nearly86%of them experience falling grades due to unrestrained access to internet and some2.6%drop out school because of psychological problems caused by internet addiction. Zhang Lanjun pointed that once addicted to internet, people experience dizziness, chest distress, upset and discomfort. Zhang Hongru posed that people addicted to internet often have perceptibility loss in psychological aspect and fewer communication with family and friends, at the same time, easy to get excited, anxious and nervous.Li Minxiu found that the mood the internet addicts is unstable and they are often introvert, easy to feel lonely and have poor self-control, therefore, they are much more eager to challenge and attack, which shapes their characteristic to risk.Most researchers found through psychological instruction that in internet addiction-related psychological issues, college students tend to hide from life, such as feeling shameful, inferior to others, lack of confidence, depressed and problems in interpersonal communication. With the burden of study and the pressure of internship in hospital before graduation, college students, if without a sound psychology and healthy body, can not even finish their study, let lone saving patients.How to control and try to change the current situation of internet addiction in college students has now been an important issue. At present, research on the above-mentioned field from both home and abroad is still at a start-up stage and problems related to the research is a blur. Therefore, there is a need to conduct extensive research to internet addiction,ObjectivesThe study is to investigate the current state of students’ internet addiction, explore medical students’ internet addiction and their psychological health, provide theoretical basis for the prevention and intervention of internet addiction, cultivate medical students’ proper awareness in using internet, offer some material for psychological guidance and treatment to potential internet addicts and lay a solid foundation for doctors’ psychological heath, medical ethics and advanced skills.MethodologyStratified cluster sampling was applied to investigate the current state.550students (with523efficient questionnaires) from a medical college were selected to participate in the investigation. The research instrument includes:(1) General Information Questionnaire (2) Chinese Internet Addiction Scale(3)Symptom Checklist(SCL-90). SPSS16.0was applied to conduct descriptive analysis and t-test was used to analyze symptom checklist.Main Results1. Among523medical students, all of them have access to internet and internet addiction rate is14.44%, with male students(18.8%) more than female students(4.4%) those from cities(19.3%) more than from rural areas(10.3%) and towns(10.2%); freshmen(20.9%) more than sophomores(9.7%) and juniors(7.2%). All of the above-mentioned results are statistically significant.(P<0.01) Internet addiction rate is high among clinical medicine majors, children from a single-parent family, only child of the family, students with poor performance in study, and those with high cost of living. Those medical students who surf the internet several times in each week, have long access to internet, prefer internet games are easy to addict to internet.2. The variation of indicators of SCL-90as to medical students’internet addiction is statistically significant.(P<0.05)Conclusion and Recommendations1. Medical students’internet addiction is relatively commonplace situation, with the rate a bit higher than past research findings. There are more male students addicted to internet than female students, students from cities more than those from rural areas.2. Psychological health and internet use characteristics are found to be related to medical students’internet addiction.3. Internet addiction is the result of individual, family and social factors. Therefore, precaution measures aiming at influencing factors of internet addiction and psychological health has now been an urgency. Freshmen’s internet use records should be established to get a general knowledge of medical students’internet addiction; the educational mode should be in consistency with the demands of quality-oriented education, helping students shape a correct outlook of value and life, improving students’ability to distinguish and self-control, provide positive education and guidance to their internet use; reinforce students’psychological health education and cultivate their sound character and healthy mood and make them adapt to life and society with scientific attitude; The exploration of campus network information resources should be enhanced and internet knowledge should be popularized to promote internet education and improve the exploitation of network resources, trying to avoid negative effects of internet and develop positive use of internet. As for those who addict to internet, we should apply timely and comprehensive treatment to them, with the combination of ideological and political work, psychological therapy and necessary medicine treatment.
