[objective]We have reviewed and summarized the relative records about polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in part of the ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) books systematically, which can supply historical references frame for treating PCOS with TCM methods. Meanwhile, questionnaire surveys of interview type have been conducted for the PCOS patients in order to seek for distribution regularities of TCM syndromes and the relative pathological factors. And then it can provide references frame for syndrome differentiation of PCOS, search common pathological but non-genetic factors that result in PCOS, and then can lay the foundation of forming relative preventing schemes.[methods]1. Neatening relative classical medical books on gynaecology:for instance, Huangdi Neijing, The Complete Effective Prescriptions for Women, Fuqingzhu’s Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Searching for the relative documents about PCOS (including delayed menstruation cycle, amenorrhea, infertility, obesity, etc) and summarizing relative syndromes, pathogenesis and therapeutic laws and regulations of Ancient TCM famous doctors.2. We make questionnaire about PCOS through referring to researching methods of clinical epidemiology and investigating PCOS patients" TCM syndromes, habits and relative family diseases. Adopting SPSS17.0statistical software with frequency analysis and clustering analysis to find out distribution regularities of TCM syndromes in PCOS.[results] 1. According to the ancient classical TCM books, the etiology and pathogenesis of PCOS are complicated which are divided with deficiency syndrome and excessive syndrome. For deficiency syndrome, it relates to deficiency of kidney, spleen, stomach and the lack of qi and blood while the excessive syndromes are resulting from phlem, cold, heat and damp pathological factors and liver qi stagnation.2.Main patterns of syndromes in215cases are:Shen deficiency with liver depression and blockage with phlegm-damp51(23.7%), Shen deficiency with liver depression44(20.5%), Shen deficiency with liver depression and blood stasis34(15.8%). Among them, cases with Shen deficiency are the most type-203cases (83.88%), liver depression reaches the second one-169cases (78.6%), blockage with phlegm-damp are106cases (49.3%).3. From the angle of deficiency and excess, mixture of deficiency and excess is mostly diagnosed, which is199cases (97.1%), simple excessive syndrome is10cases (4.7%), simple deficiency syndrome is6cases (2.8%) and the compound type is210cases that occupies the majority of215cases while the single type is only5cases.4. The most common TCM symptoms are successively easy to anger, alopecia, soreness and weakness in waist and knees, amnesia, engorgement, extreme chilliness, breast distending pain, foreign body sensation in the throat, depression, bitter mouth and dry throat, and exhausted are usually observed.5. In the genetic factors, family diabetes reach the first place (28.8%), obesity is the second factor (27.40%), and the following causes are hypertension, irregular menstruation in maternal line, alopecia on the father and gynecological oncology.6. During the non-genetic factors, the syndromes are observed in the occurrence frequency:abnormal feeling (77.2%), excessive pressure (76.7%), lack of exercises (63.7%) and abnormal sleep (58.6%).7. In the162patients who have taken part in the insulin release test, there are61cases are insulin resistance (37.65%of the total numbers). During these cases,14patients are obesity,19cases are overweight,28cases are normal weight while0case is under weight, which are respectively77.78%,63.33%,30.11%,0.00%.[conclusion]1. According to the relative contents from classical TCM books, most famous doctors believed that PCOS has closest relationship with kidney, liver, spleen and stomach. From syndromes differentiation based on the zangfu, qi and blood, meridians, six climatic exopathogens, seven human emotions and block of blood and phlegm, PCOS has been believed that etiology and pathogenesis are complicated and the nature of this disease belongs to the mixture of deficiency and excess.2.215PCOS cases in this research successively are:Shen deficiency with liver depression and blockage with phlegm-damp, Shen deficiency with liver depression, Shen deficiency with liver depression and blood stasis. Among them, cases with the mixture of deficiency and excess are the most type. In the common types of syndromes, the most common is Shen deficiency, liver depression and blockages with phlegm-damp go after. According to this research, in the genetic factors, family diabetes, obesity, and hypertension are the most common causes while in the non-genetic factors, the syndromes are observed in the occurrence frequency: abnormal feeling, excessive pressure, lack of exercises and abnormal sleep are most usually observed. And in the patients with insulin release test, the higher the BMI is, the riskier the patients will suffer from the insulin resist.
