BackgroundThe degree of the coronary artery lesions could be evaluated by somebiomarkers in the patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). And thesebiomarkers could be used to select the therapy plan and just the prognosis of thepatients. Based on the recent researches, cystatin C (Cys-c) might play a role inthe development progress of the CHD and be a predictor of the severity of CHD.ObjectiveTo explore the relationship between fasting serum Cys-c level and thenumber of diseased coronary artery vessels in patients with CHD.MethodsOne hundred and forty-seven patients with suspected CHD for coronaryangiography (CAG) were enrolled in this study. The patients were divided intoCHD group (n=110) and non-CHD group (n=37) based on the results of CAG.The patients were furtherly divided into three subgroups including single lesionvessel group, double lesion vessels group and three lesion vessels group basedon the lesion involved in left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD), leftcircumflex artery (LCX) and right coronary artery (RCA). Fasting serum Cys-clevel was investigated and the relationship between it and the number ofdiseased coronary artery was analyzed in all enrolled patients.Results1. The fasting serum Cys-c level was significantly higher in the CHD groupcompared with that of the control group (0.87±0.18mg/L vs0.76±0.14mg/L, P <0.01).2. The fasting serum Cys-c level in single lesion vessel group, doublelesion vessels group and three lesion vessels group was0.81±0.14mg/L,0.86±0.17mg/L,1.00±0.19mg/L, respectively. The fasting serum Cys-c level inthree lesion vessels group was significantly higher compared with that of thesingle lesion vessel group, double lesion vessels group and the control group (allP<0.01).3. The fasting serum Cys-c level was positively correlated with thenumber of diseased coronary artery in CHD patients(r=0.444, P<0.01).ConclusionFasting serum Cys-c level was positively correlated with the number ofdiseased coronary artery in CHD patients. Cys-c might be used as a predictor ofthe number of diseased coronary artery in CHD patients.
