Objective:The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) in providing pain relief during labour, as well as its influence on the mode of delivery, intrapartum&postpartum hemorrhage, Apgar, score, the characteristics of amniotic fluid, and the maternal stress hormones (ACTH and COR).Methods:72pregnant women were enrolled and randomized allocated to one of three groups: a DOLA+TENS group, a DOLA+SHAM-TENS group and a DOLA ONLY group. In addition, Labor pain intensity was assessed with visual analog scale (VAS). All groups were evaluated by VAS score in four different time points during the delivery:①the cervix is open about3cm and Vas score is over6;②labor analgesia for0.5h;③labor analgesia for1h;④the cervix is open about10cm, and was drawn blood in three different time points during the delivery:①the cervix is open about3cm and Vas score is over6;②the cervix is open about10cm;③after childbirth. In this study, the same DOLA service was implemented in all groups.Results:(1) TENS produces a statistically significant decrease in pain during labour in DOLA+TENS group.(P<0.01); there was a highly significant difference (p<0.001) between the VAS scores with TENS,without TENS and SHAM-TENS.(2) there were no significant difference between the three groups on mode of delivery, and labor duration, total amount of bleeding in24h postpartum, Apgar score, the characteristics of amniotic fluid and Apqgar score of neonates (P>0.05).(3) there were no significant difference between the three groups in the level of ACTH and COR at three different time points (P>0.05).Conclusions:(1) TENS can reduce VAS score and relieve the labor pain during the delivery.(2) TENS had no significant influence on mode of delivery, and labor duration, total amount of bleeding in24h postpartum, Apgar score, the characteristics of amniotic fluid and Apqgar score of neonates.(3) TENS had no significant influence on the level ACTH and COR in blood.
