Objective: Detection of tumor markers in cancer patients has become animportant examination. The same kind of malignant tumor of digestive tract maycontain one or more tumor markers. Results of single and combined assay of tumormarkers of CEA, AFP, CA50, CA19-9and CA72-4were compared, to assess the valueof tumor markers in malignant digestive tract tumor diagnosis. This study is to explorethe value of combined detection of serum tumor markers in clinical diagnosis ofmalignant tumors in digestive system. Methods: Two hundred patients were enrolled in our study. One hundred patientswere diagnosed as benign digestive disease and the other one hundred patients sufferedfrom malignant tumor in digestive system. The diagnosis of malignant tumors wasbased on endoscopy, pathology and abdominal CT scan. The single and combineddetection of serum tumor markers of CEA, AFP, CA50, CA19-9and CA72-4in thesetwo hundred patients were analyzed by the method of electrochemiluminescence. Results: The sensitivity of serum CEA, AFP, CA50, CA19-9and CA72-4were33.3%,0%,11.1%,33.3%and11.1%respectively in patients with esophageal carcinoma, while the combineddetection sensitivity was55.5%; the sensitivity of serum CEA, AFP, CA50, CA19-9and CA72-4were52%,4.8%,52.3%,42.8%and64.2%respectively in patients with gastric carcinoma, while thecombined detection sensitivity was72.3%; the sensitivity of serum CEA, AFP, CA50, CA19-9andCA72-4were46.7%,6.7%,60%,80%and26.7%respectively in patients with pancreatic cancer, while the combined detection sensitivity was93.3%; the sensitivity of serum CEA, AFP, CA50,CA19-9and CA72-4were75%,5%,20%,30%and55%respectively in patients with carcinoma oflarge intestine, while the combined detection sensitivity was81.4%; the sensitivity of serum CEA,AFP, CA50, CA19-9and CA72-4were21.4%,92.9%,7.1%,50%and0%respectively in patients with liver cancer, while the combined detection sensitivity was100%. The specificity of serum CEA,AFP, CA50, CA19-9and CA72-4were73%,55%,81%,48%and43%respectively in patients withdigestive malignant tumors, while the combined detection specificity was86%. The levels of CA50,CA19-9, CEA, AFP and CA72-4in patients with malignant tumors in digestive system were higherthan that in patients with benign diseases (P<0.05or P<0.01).Conclusions:1. The combined detection of serum tumor markers of CA50, CA19-9, CEA, AFPand CA72-4can improve the sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of malignanttumors in digestive system.2. The combined detection of serum tumor markers may be applied as a usefulmethod in clinical diagnosis of malignant tumors in digestive system.
