Objective:With the development of nursing discipline and the continuous improvement ofnursing practice standards, how to stabilize nursing stuff and maintain nurses’ empathy forpatients became the problems which are urgent to be solved. This study aims to develop areliable and valid instrument to measure compassion fatigue for clinical nurses in China.Clinical nurses’ compassion fatigue condition in four hospitals in Shanghai was alsoassessed by applying the scale combined with semi-structured interviews, so as to providean effective way for managers to acknowledge the physical and psychological conditionsof clinical nurses and develop a more thorough, humanistic measure to maintain thepassions of clinical nurses, improve the quality of nursing as well as the satisfaction ofpatients.Methods:1. Literature research was used to grasp the current domestic and internationalresearch on the assessments of compassion fatigue, on this basis, analyzed and comparedthe application of the relevant measurements.2. Introduce the professional quality of life scale to China through the “translation-back translation-cultural adjustment-preliminary test” model after we got theauthorization of professor Stamm, assessing the reliability and validity of the scale strictlyby exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory analysis (CFA).3. Applying the Chinese version of the scale to investigate, evaluate and analyze thestate of the790clinical nurses’ compassion fatigue in four tertiary hospitals in Shanghai.All the data were typed in and analyzed with SPSS20.0and AMOS20.0software.4. Semi-structured interview method was used to collect data from9nurses who metthe inclusion criteria in three tertiary hospitals in shanghai, and the external reasons forbeing at the risk of compassion fatigue was explored. Results:1. Formed the Chinese version of the compassion fatigue scale for clinical nurses. Thescale consists of three separate scoring subscale,25items. The three sub-scales include:①compassion satisfaction, with10items;②compassion fatigue, with8items;③burnout, with7items. The three sub-scale internal consistency coefficients (Cronbach’s αcoefficient) were all acceptable.2. Survey results showed that general condition for nurses in Shanghai is tolerableness.The average score of compassion satisfaction subscale was33.04±5.94, the averagescore of compassion fatigue subscale was20.71±4.37and the average score of burnoutsubscale was20.89±3.67. Unvaried analysis results showed that different departments,marital status, working conditions of the nursing population had a statistically significantdifference between the various dimensions.3. Through analysing, sorting and refining of the interview data, three topics drivenfrom it: the professional life events、nurse-patient communication barrier and lack ofcoping resources.Conclusion:1. The Chinese version of the compassion fatigue measurement has good reliabilityand validity, which is suitable for the usage in clinical nurses in China.2. When we emphasized the empathy of nurses, we should not ignore the clinicalnurses’ psychological issues, and manage should give adequate clinical nurses practicingbefore the educational and emotional support, to enable them maintain a good workingstate and enthusiasm, better services for patients, thus improving both the quality ofnursing and patients satisfaction.
