Gelsemium elegans is used as a traditional feed additive in chicken and pig. This experiment researched the bacteriostatic efficacy of G elegans, evaluated the safty performance through toxicity experiments in different animals, investigated the effectiveness of growth promotion in chichen and pig, and detected vestigital in animal muscle. Mainly results are as follows.1. Vitro bacteriostasis test and Anti-coccidiosis effectiveness of G。 elegans. Vitro bacteriostasis test on Salmonella, non-pathogenic E.coli, Streptococcus feacalis and Bacillus used different G elegan ethanol extract Ⅰ、Ⅱ、Ⅲ、Ⅳ(0.05g/mL,0.1g/mL,0.2g/mL,0.4g/mL). We found that G elegan ethanol extract had no bacteriostatic action on Salmonella, neither on other three bacterials. The test showed that G elegan had no effect on intestinal microbial ecosystem.Gradient concentration dosages of whole plant suspension of G elegans was given to4-week-old broiler by using stomach tube which had infected with Eimeria tenella. One week later we found that the symptoms of bloody stools gradually disappeared. Vitro test showed that G elegans can significantly inhibit the maturing of unsporulated oocysis of Eimeria tenella.2. Toxic test.Acute toxic test of G elegans in mice.625mg/kg·bw、836mg/kg·bw、1118mg/kg·bw、1495mg/kg·bw、2000mg/kg-bw of G elegans decoction was given to18-22g mice by intragastricing. The intraperitoneal LD50for mice of G elegans was1335.442mg/kg-bw and the confident limit on95percent lever was1332.6432mg/kg-bw-1338.2408mg/kg·bw. Acute toxic test of G elegans in chick.1000mg/kg·bw、1995mg/kg·bw、3981mg/kg·bw、7943mg/kg·bw、16000mg/kg·bw of G elegans decoction was given to4-day-old chick by intragastricing. No death occurred to chick showed that G elegans has no toxicity to chicken.Acute toxic test of G elegans in duckling.1000mg/kg·bw、1995mg/kg·bw、3981mg/kg·bw、7943mg/kg·bw、16000mg/kg·bw of G. elegans decoction was given to4-day-old Cherry Valley duck by intragastricing. No death occurred to duckling showed that G elegans has no toxicity to duck.Subchronic toxic test of G elegans in mice. Compared with the control group, adding0.02%G. elegans powder in basic diets could reduce feed utilization rate of18-22g KM mice. Feed intake increased and feed utilization rate reduced significantly when adding0.04%G. elegans powder in basic diets(p<0.05). The results showed that adding dose higher than0.02%may efffect development on mice. Pathological section of mice kidney showed that cell around the kidney glomerular proliferation proliferated more seriously with the increase dosages of G elegans. It means that high dose of G elegans had coused damage to mice kidney.4. Growth test on and residue test animals.Growth test in broiler. Compared with the control group, adding0.2%G. elegans powder in basic diets could reduce FCR significantly(p<0.05). Slaughter rate, blood test and biochemical index of broiler are not significantly different compared with control group when adding2%G. elegans powder in basic diets. The results showed that G elegans has no adverse effects to broiler health when the dose is less than2%.Growth test in piglet. Compared with the control group, adding0.1%G. elegans powder in basic diets could highly increase average daily gain and reduce FCR(p<0.05). It showed that adding0.1%G. elegans powder in basic diets could promote growth.Residue test in animals:G elegans alkaloids were not found in the muscle of the broilers and pigs fed the basic diet adding G elegans powder. In conclusion, G elegans has no efffect on the micro-ecological balance in animals. G elegans could inhibit the growth of Eimeria tenella, reduce the incidence of coccidiosis. G elegans has low toxicity to mice and has no toxicity to chicken and duck. Adding0.2%G. elegans in broiler basic diets can reduce FCR significantly(p<0.05). Adding0.1%G. elegans in piglet basic diets can increase daily gain andreduce FCR (p<0.05).
