Nowadays the adhesion technology between rubber and other materials (especially metal and fiber) has been used widely in the machining process of rubber products like tire, adhesive tap, tub et al, and the corresponding reports are plentiful while reports about adhesion technology between rubber and rubber are less. Our research aimed at achieving good adhesion between tire compounds (NR/SBR blend) and NBR without using adhesive during vulcanization, and tried to find some feasible methods to improve the adhesive properties of NR/SBR blend and NBR based on large numbers of references.Firstly the effect of accelerators on the adhesion between NBR and tire compound was studied on. We tried to improve interfacial diffusion by prolong scorch time (T10) of NBR, because of the possible significant effect of T10 on the interfacial diffusion as well as adhesion. Environmental-friendly accelerator TBSI can prolong T10 because of its structure but failed in promoting better adhesion between NBR and tire compounds. At the same time the effect of polar nature of NBR on adhesion was also investigated. Adhesion between NBR and tire compounds became poorer with increasing acrylonitrile (AN) content (the adhesion breakage between NIPOL DN401 and MBZ30A or MBZ30B is bulk breakage while the AN content of NIPOL DN401 is 18%). The polar nature of AN is an important factor affecting the adhesion of NBR and NR/SBR. So adding some unpolar rubbers into NBR to reduce the polar nature was considered. Results indicating SBR is a better second component than HTPB for the good adhesion. Then the structure and properties of epoxy resin (EP) modified NBR was studied in this paper. For epoxy resin is a feasible viscid resin, it is necessary to comfirm mechanical properties, curing characters etc. of NBR modified by epoxy resin. EP634 as an epoxy resin with lower epoxy equivalent weight and EPE12 as an epoxy resin with lower epoxy equivalent weight were selected to further research on the base of the exploring experiment. The effects of EMI, content of EP and fillers on the properties of NBR/EP blends were investigated and results showed that NBR/EPE12 blend has better mechanical properties. Then reactive NBR (ATBN and XNBR) was used to achieve better performance of NBR/EPE12 blend because of potential reaction between reactive NBR and epoxy resin. Results showed that the tensile strength and tear strength of NBR/EPE12 blend are much higher than NBR, and the addition of ATBN or XNBR can improve the tensile strength and tear strength of NBR/EPE12 blend and also the poor adhesive properties between NBR/EPE12 blend.Swelling experiments and FTIR were used to identify the reaction between reactive NBR and EPE12. DMA results showed lower tgδof NBR after addition of EPE12 and ATBN or XNBR.
