In recent years,developments in signal processing and the invention ofsmall,inexpensive,low power microprocessors lead to the advent of Wireless SensorNetwork(WSN). The signal processing in WSN is different from the conventionalwireless networks in two decisive aspects:firstly, the signal processing inWSN isperformed in fully distributed manner;secondly,because of the limited computationcapacites of WSN, it is vital to develop an energy-efficient signal processingalgorithms.Mobile target localization and tracking problem in Wireless Sensor Network havereceived intensive attention,becomes a hot research topic at the current InformationTechnology field,and have been driven by the requisite to achieve higher localisationaccuracy, lower cost, and the smallest form factor.Because mobile target localization and tracking algorithms have been attractingintensive research attention, prolific literature regarding the issue have emerged. Thispaper is devoted to discussing the existing WSN-based mobile target localisation andtracking methods.This paper includes three studies. The first study is the design of a triangulation-based localisation method using Received Signal Strength(RSS) technique for indoorlocalisation applications. The method could achieve low localisation error in complexindoor environments by predicting the environmental characteristics.The second studyis the investigation of a fingerprinting localisation method for indoor localisationapplication. The approach could offers reasonable localisation accuracy while reducingthe offline computation time. The third study is the design of a ZigBee based trackingsystem to track multiple mobile target nodes wherever the density of router and enddevice nodes is low.
