Data forwarding is one of the core functions of the backbone node switch. Coordinated with other software modules, it makes the whole node switch operating well. Because of the efficiency, well expandability of MPLS technology and the strong forwarding capability, high reliability of ATM technology, with the combination of these two technologies, the efficiency and reliability of the data forwarding can be greatly enhanced in the backbone node switch.In this paper, the features, basic conceptions and architecture of MPLS technology are briefly described first. Then the opearation principle of MPLS data forwarding is introduced and how to integrate the link layer’s data forwarding in ATM label switching and the network layer’s routing mechanism is studied. On the basis of the above, the realizaton of MPLS data forwarding software is presented in detail, which includes:the interface design, data forwarding flow, and design of each sub-module, etc. At last, the software validation and its results are given. It shows that the realization integrates the rapid data forwarding of data link layter and the expandability, flexibility of network layer which expediates the data forwarding speed, enhances the flexibility and efficiency of network resource utilization, guarantees the network’s reliability. At the same time, the VPN, data driven LSP setup and PS functions are provided in this software.
