Millimeter and submillimeter waves with the unique advantages in theelectro-magnetic spectrum are very important for the national defense military andcivil applications. However, the radiation sources are one of the keys to develop theapplications of millimeter and submillimeter waves. At the band of millimeter andsub-millimeter,Free-electron laser(FEL) is one of important radiation sources of highPower and tunable frequency. On the other hand, the vacuum electron devices based ongrating, such as the backward wave oscillator(BWO), Orotron and Smith-Purcell(Sp)radiation source, are widely attentive by the researchers, for which are a promisingalternate of the development of tunable, compact, Powerful radiation source.The coherent millimeter and THZ radiation generated by the periodic bunches isstudied in this dissertation. The major achievements are as follows.1.the properties of SP radiation generated by the electron bunches, are analyzed indetail. The theoretical analyses show that the angular distribution and radiationfrequency strongly depend on the electron energy, the size of the bunch, the electronbunch shape, and the type of grating. According to the numerical calculations, theradiation can operate at millimeter wave or THz with feasible parameters for thebunches and the grating.2.In order to obtain THz-electromagnetic wave at0.22THz, in-depth analysis ofthe size parameters on the output frequency effect, obtained ideal size parameters forthe further research on0.22THz source.3.Theoretical calculation and microwave simulation software CST and particlesimulation software Magic has used to0.22THz source research, mainly through theparameter optimization and the theoretical calculation and numerical simulation ofcombination, we had achieved the terahertz source design, with4kW output power.
