The Study On Language Features Of News Headlines

The object of this paper: the message headline, is a kind of newsheadlines. Because of its unique language features and functionalcharacteristics, the message headline has attracted widespreadattention by both the News Communication circles and the Linguisticscircles.Otherwise, the Linguistics circles just pay little attention to themessage headline study, only a few studies can be found in the cornerof the headlines studies. With the development of information society,the news headline,especially the message headline,has showed itsrelative independence,which has a great research significance.The newspaper message headline is one of the first news headlinesin history, which has a long history and distinctive linguistic features; Thenetwork message headline is a new kind of message headlines with thedevelopment of network in recent years, which has a great timecharacteristics. In view of that the television and radio message headlineare not easy to record, the paper selects the newspaper messageheadline and the network news headline, uses the quantitative statisticalmethods, investigates the language features of the messageheadlines,and analyzes the similarities and differences of languagefeatures between them. The message headline transmission process isa kind of special verbal communication process, its formation oflanguage features is subject to many factors. Among them, the contexthad a significant impact.The paper consists of seven parts. In the first part,the authordefined the research object,described the present research situation,elucidated the research significance, and described the corpus ofsources and research methods. The second part analyzed the linguisticfeatures of message headline abbreviation, and analyzed the similaritiesand differences between the newspapers and network news headlinesabbreviations. The third part analyzed the message headline sentencestructure and sentence category features, and made a thorough research in the sentence structure features. Part four analyzed thelinguistic features of message headline rhetoric, including characteristicsof the distribution of rhetoric in newspapers and network messageheadlines, as well as the characteristics and functions of variousrhetorical devices in message headlines. Part five analyzed the linguisticfeatures of the punctuation in the message headline, includingcharacteristics of the distribution of punctuation in newspapers andnetwork message headlines, and the features and functions of the useof punctuation in the newspapers and network message headlines. Inthe sixth part, the author attempted to start from the context point of view,tried to explain the message headline features, the similarities anddifferences between the newspapers and network news headlines. Partseven is the epilogue, the author made a summary of this paper.
