In the current high-performance computing systems, in order to compensate for the lack of computing power with a single processor, it is needed to interconnect multiple processors for parallel computing, thereby improving the computing power of the overall system. In current used electrical network-on-chip of high-performance computing system, some inherent flaws of the electrical interconnection have become the main obstacles to improve system performance. Compared with electrical interconnection, on-chip optical interconnection has better performance, and is a better chip-level interconnect solutions. In order to break through the bottleneck of network-on-chip based on electrical interconnects and meet the increasing demand for high-performance computing technology, this paper has done the research on the optical network-on-chip.The main work this paper completed is as follows:1, Complete the research of a network on chip with a cluster based topology (Cluster Mesh). Design the network structure, node structure, communication protocols and routing strategy of the network, and then use the OPNET network simulation tool to build the simulation model. Through simulation, we study the Cluster Mesh topology network performance. By comparing the simulation results with the traditional Mesh network, we find that the Cluster Mesh network has advantage under a large local traffic.2, Complete the study and simulation on an packet-switched optical network (BOIN). First, we do the theoretical research on the network structure and routing algorithm of the network. Build the simulation platform for the network using OPNET software. Through simulation, we analyze the network performance by delay, throughput and other related parameters. By comparing the simulation result of BOIN network with traditional circuit-switched Torus network, we find out the advantage of BOIN network in use of network resources.Through research and simulation, we get the advantages of the Cluster Mesh topology and the packet switching based BOIN network in chip-level optical network field. Simulation results show that, when local traffic in the network is large, Cluster Mesh network topology has better latency and throughput performance than an ordinary 2D Mesh topology with the same size. The optical network on chip based on packet switching has a higher link utilization than that use circuit switching. These two technologies will become the focus in the research on the chip-level optical interconnection network in the future.
