Syntactic transfer is a branch of language transfer, and researchers have paidmore attention to it recently. In the process of few years of teaching practice in ajunior middle school, the author collected various examples of syntactic transfer in thestudents’ English sentence writing. Negative transfer impedes the process of targetlanguage acquisition. The thesis aims to explore and discuss the negative transferbased on the influence of Chinese syntactic structure and rules on English sentencewriting. The author analyzes the main reasons resulting in the theoretical frame ofContrastive Analysis, Error Analysis and Inter-language, theory of Markedness. To start with, this thesis shows the definition of negative transfer in syntax, andalso introduces the relative theories of language transfer. Then the subjects, methods, and procedures are introduced. And the results of the analysis show the main syntacticdifferences between Chinese and English and the causes. Then it presents, withexamples, comparison of some special syntactic structures between Chinese andEnglish. At last, some pedagogical conclusions are drawn about what should bedone for the teachers and then learned to reduce the negative transfer of nativelanguage. The results of the experiment show that negative transfer has great effects on theEnglish learning for the junior middle school students. But we can overcome thenegative transfer by having effective syntax teaching, such as compare and analyzethe syntactic differences and the causes, to improve the English learning strategiesand attitude of the students, so they can gradually form the habit of English thinking. And in the end to improve the English learning ability.
