Nowadays English writing has attracted considerable attention in the research of high school English teaching. In the process of over eight years'teaching practice, the author collected various examples of syntactic transfer in the students'English writing. Based on the previous achievements in this field, the author's research is concentrated on the study of negative transfer on the influence of Chinese syntactic structure in high school students'English writing. The research is carried out in the theoretical frame of Contrastive Analysis, Error Analysis and Inter-language.To start with, this thesis gives the definition and classification of negative transfer in syntax. The thesis also introduces the concept and the source of language transfer theory. Then subjects, methods, instruments and procedures are introduced. After that the thesis concentrates itself on listing errors due to the negative transfer in syntax. The errors are categorized into missing copula, incorrect placement of adverb, inability to use Relative Clause and confusion in Verb transitivity with examples provided. The study shows that the main cause for negative transfer in syntax is the difference between the two languages. At last, some pedagogical conclusions are drawn about what should be done in order to reduce negative transfer of native language.
