With the development of medical biology, the biomedical model is turned to the psycho-social-mode, psychosomatic disease more and more by the clinician’s attention. Professor Zhao Zhifu think, the traditional Chinese medicine theory contains the concept of "one spirit" and "correspondence between man and nature". The so-called "one spirit" theory is to say, the mental activity and human viscera function closely related. In other words, the mental activity has a positive role in promoting the human viscera function. Therefore, psychosomatic diseases using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment have great advantages. Based on the academic thoughts from classics as Neijin and Prof. Ou Yangqi and Dong Jianhua’s theory and experience,"rigid-gentle syndrome differentiation" theory of TCM was proposed. In clinical psychosomatic disease curative effect is remarkable. In the part of theoretical discussion, it focuses on the theory of "rigid-gentle syndrome differentiation". The theory is based on the characteristics of the liver which belongs to Yin in physique and Yang in function. Rigid syndrome includes status of Yang origin with excessive emotion, the liver over disperses qi which results in liver fire, insufficient yin and excessive yang. Gentle syndrome includes status of yin origin with excessive emotion; the liver disperses qi insufficient which results in qi-blood and fluid stagnation. In a word, the pathogenesis of psychosomatic disease is that,"first of all, the emotional stimulation harms the liver, then effects the heart in the rigid-character patient or effects the spleen and lung in the gentle-character patient, finally it impacts the kidney". Namely, disease syndromes in the early of the illness mostly show that liver-qi depression, liver and spleen with disease, liver and heart with disease, or liver and lung with disease. In the later stages of the disease, the syndromes mostly show that liver fire injuring yin essence, yin deficiency of liver and kidney or yang deficiency of liver and spleen. Lastly it results to yin and yang collapse. At the beginning phase the disease syndromes are excess, then after many days from excess to deficiency, rarely pure deficiency syndrome. Based on the theory, the psychosomatic disease is summarized to "2classes,4items and16families". The therapeutic principle is using rigid method to cure the gentle syndrome, using gentle method to cure the rigid syndrome. It is very effective in clinical. In clinical part, six common diseases as object are selected, including the gallbladder distention, chest pain, insomnia, depression, headache and palpitation. We will research on these diseases from seven aspects which are Chinese medicine clinical manifestations, cause and pathogenesis of TCM, the ancient and modern physicians understanding the diseases, the thought of clinical syndromes differentiation, drug using rules, clinical cases and so on. We will record and discuss each disease from two aspects:rigid syndrome and gentle syndrome. It is important for us to inherit the academic thought. In conclusion, through these two years follow the adviser learning, it has significant effect of treating psychosomatic disease with the theory of rigid-gentle syndrome differentiation in clinical. That is because the liver plays a core role in the pathogenesis of the disease. First of all, the emotional stimulation harms the liver, and then affects other organs. In short, the theory of rigid-gentle syndrome differentiation is based on differentiation of eight principles and has more in accord with the law of psychosomatic medicine. We should conscientiously sum up, inheritance and development.
