ObjectivesThe current trend of nursing education reform is to highlight the characteristics ofnursing profession and the development of humanistic quality in potential nursingprofessionals. Researches on the strategies of humanistic education in advancednursing education reflect both the practice of humanistic education in nursing scienceas well as the validation of nursing education reform. In this study, based on thenature of humanity in nursing profession and the theory of humanistic qualitydevelopment, we analyzed the status quo and influencing factors of humanisticquality among the undergraduate nursing students (hereinafter referred to as thenursing students) of Nanjing Medical University (NMU), and explored the strategiesof targeted cultivation of humanistic quality in nursing students, with the aim oflaying a foundation for the ultimate achievement of the advanced nursing educationgoals and the development of high-quality nursing personnel.MethodsA questionnaire survey was conducted of the nursing students of NMU. Full-timeundergraduate nursing students (years1to4) from School of Nursing were enrolledfor the present status of nursing students’ humanistic quality. The now availableliterature concerning nursing students’ humanistic quality theory was reviewed. Weconducted a quantitative study of the survey results using SPSS16.0and EpiCalc2000for statistical analysis.Results1. The majority of the nursing students demonstrated a strong desire for humanisticquality cultivation to improve their own self-development and cultural taste, andhence realize their ideals and values. We can see that the nursing students are mostlypositive in attitude. 2. The nursing students generally disliked dogmatic and rigid lectures, especiallythose with a clear ideological indoctrination, while a subtle, concrete, close-to-lifelecture was more popular.3. Nursing students of different grades showed cognitive differences in humanisticquality cultivation. Most nursing students’ outlook on life was consistent withChina’s cultural traditions and social norms, but a small number of nursing studentsshowed a fuzzy and uncertain attitude or an attitude against the mainstream ideologyof the society.4. The environmental factors influencing nursing students’ humanistic qualityincluded society, family and school, while the internal factors influencing nursingstudents’ humanistic quality were academic pressure, sense of accomplishment, andself-confidence, etc.ConclusionsExternal environmental factors and internal factors influencing nursing students’humanistic quality are co-existent and intricate. If left unchallenged, they can easilyaffect the humanistic quality of the nursing students directly and influence the qualityof clinical care in the future indirectly. As the most important cultivation place ofnursing students, the medical university and its nursing school must pay adequateattention to these factors. Considering the present situation and problems encountered,we must reconstruct the traditional approach to humanistic quality cultivation, setnew principles and develop new strategies to establish a cultivation system ofhumanistic quality of nursing science.
