New historical Drama in the New Era (since the Third Session of the EleventhCentral Committee of the Party in1978till now) has already been put on stage for30years. In this period, tremendous changes took place in is rapidly developing nation insocial economy, politic mood, culture thoughts and public aesthetic standards. With allthese changes, the drama itself has also experienced some essentially change anddevelopment. Based on the theory and combine its development, this article will analysisthe new development of New historical Drama in these30years.In the80s there were3major theory developments in New historical Drama–“thegrand discuss on Drama Prospects”,“the debates between ‘Dramatization’ and‘Modernization’” and “the debate of Historical Drama”. Results from them, firstly,“thegrand discuss on Drama Prospects” has made an important contribution to the correctionand recovery from the damage of New historical Drama by the culture revolution in60-70s, which basically twisted the “artistic features” and “theoretic system” of the drama;Then “the debates between ‘Dramatization’ and ‘Modernization’” putted modernhumanistic sprites and new expression technique into the drama, satisfied the improvingartistic tastes of audience and developed the traditional stage expressions; Finally the “thedebate of Historical Drama” liberated the writers’ minds further. It unchained the “artistictruth” from “historical truth”, gave the power to writer to make better work; The Newhistorical Drama in Shanxi Province created during this time have reflected the denial of politic propaganda in the old time and shown the tendency of liberal creating. The workshas applied macroscopically narrating and elitism standpoints, laid stress on rationalthinking.In the90s the theoretical movements of New historical Drama focused on the“playful recreates” of history drama in TV media. There were debates on the phenomenonof “historical drama going entertainment”. After the debate, the entertainment function ofDrama work was enhanced, bold fiction upon history start to be accepted. In Shanxi, theNew historical Drama works during this time were largely improved, the content start tomove from elitism worshiping to folk narrating, showing stronger artistic features.The beginning of21century was a fast developing period for New historical Drama.The theory of it experienced3major discuss-“the grand discuss on Drama Prospects”,“rebuilding Chinese Drama” and “the academic conference of New historical Drama in thenew era”.“The grand discuss on Drama Prospects” studied on the essence of the crisis ofdrama creating and stressed on the importance of scripts for drama; and the “rebuildingChinese Drama” pointed out the direction for New historical Drama’s development; thenthe “the academic conference of New historical Drama in the new era” summarized thesuccess and failure of the drama in the past30years, re-categorized the “modern” and“historic” of drama and identified some indistinct Drama in the past. In this time, theDrama creating in Shanxi start to attach importance to its education and guidance functionwhile still weighting the artistic and entertainment features. The plays start to stress onpromoting cultural and ideological progress, expressing themes like honesty, self-relianceand united, combining education with recreation.In addition, this article analyzed opinions and influences of series of theoreticaldebates on the Drama in the new era, and gives personal opinion of these viewpoints.
