Objectives:The aim of this study was to describe nursing activities in cancer-relatedbreakthrough pain management, current training status, training willingness andanalyze the influencing factors. All of these would be reference for hospitals andadministrative department to improve the quality of management capacity and makerelated policy.Methods:A cross-sectional study was undertaken from December2012to March2013,and the self-designed questionnaire was applied on272oncology nurses selected from4III-A-grade hospitals in Changchun. The questionnaire includes three sections:⑴socio-demographical characteristics of participants;⑵nursing activities in cancer-related breakthrough pain management;⑶current training status and training willing-ness. A database was established by EpiData3.02software and analyzed the data bySPSS17.0used the descriptive analysis, chi-square test, etc.Results:1.68.8%of the oncology nurses(n=187/272) knew cancer-related breakthroughpain,143oncology nurses(52.6%) were involved in patients care.2. Among the143oncology nurses,89.5%of the nurses assess breakthroughpain,57.3%use assessment tools,62.2%record assessment contents.96.5%of nursesmanage breakthrough pain,62.9%use a combination methods of pharmacological andnon-pharmacological treatment, more than50%of nurses use relaxation, distraction,change position, massage.28.7%of nurses involved in formulating the treatment plan.54.5%of nurses instruct the patients for pain relief training. less than50%of nursesdiscuss pain management about psychological support(48.5%), non-pharmacological treatment(47.7%) and protect the site of pain(30.8%).3. Among the143oncology nurses,55.9%of nurses recognized the lack ofknowledge in breakthrough pain management was the major influencing factor, and29.4%of nurses recognized the main response measures is develop pain managementspecialized nurses.4. Among the143oncology nurses,52.7%of nurses have attended trainingprogram of breakthrough pain.87.4%of nurses are willing to attend training programin the future.5. In terms of position, authorized strength, years of working, department, nurseshave significant differences in management of breakthrough pain (P<0.05).Conclusions:1. The awareness rate of oncology nurses about breakthrough pain is68.8%.2. The current status of nursing activities in cancer-related breakthrough painmanagement is poor, mainly manifested as follows: lack of normatively andsystematically pain assessment. small number of oncology nurses use high technicalcontent methods. oncology nurses less involved in formulating the treatment plan andinstructing the patients for pain relief training. Health education is not enough.3. Fewer participants have participated in training program. But they are willingto attend in the future.4. Position, years of working, department impact on the participants,activities incancer-related breakthrough pain management.5. In order to promote the management abilities of breakthrough pain, we shouldexplore feasible countermeasures and develop standardized training program. |
