Objective To investigate the effect of carotid stenosis degree and serum level of highsensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) on the occurrence of ischemic cerebrovascular events, and to promote our understanding of the risk factors for ischemic cerebrovascular events. Methods One hundred and fourteen cases with carotid stenosis confirmed by carotidartery ultrasound were included in present study. Computer tomography scan was performedto identify if there was infarction in all patients. The cases were divided into high hs-CRPgroup and normal hs-CRP group according to the serum hs-CRP levels, and each group wassubdivided into three subgroups on the basis of the carotid stenosis degree (≤50%,50%-70%,≥70%). We compared the incidences of cerebral infarction in the groups, and analyzedthe correlation between cerebral infarction incidence and the serum hs-CRP levels or thecarotid stenosis degree. Results The incidence rate of cerebral infarction in high hs-CRP group (37/51,72.55%)was significantly higher than that in normal hs-CRP group (33/63,52.38%). However, thedifferences of cerebral infarction occurrence rates among the groups with different degree ofcarotid stenosis (≤50%,50%-70%,≥70%) were not observed, respectively,59.68%,63.89%,62.50%in each group. In the cases with lower carotid stenosis degree (≤50%),patients with high hs-CRP level suffered cerebral infarction more frequently compared withpatients having normal hs-CRP level (P<0.05).Conclusion For the patients with carotid stenosis, it is the serum hs-CRP level, but notcarotid stenosis degree, that correlate with the occurrence of ischemic cerebrovascular events.
