Objective:To summarize the clinical and pathological characteristics of gastrointestinal stromal tumor with liver metastases and to explore its principles of diagnosis and treatment. Methods:We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of20patients with liver metastases who had a completely case history in our hospital from October2009to October2010.Results:Among20patients, the median age was55.5(17-80).13cases were confirmed by pathological examination and7patients were diagnosed by an imaging study only. Synchronous and metachronous liver metastases were detected in8and12patients respectively. The primary sites were stomach in7cases, small intestine in11cases, rectum in1case and extra-gastrointestinal tract in1case. Seven cases of the liver metastasis were treated with the integration of surgical resections and imatinib,5with imatinib only,1with surgical resection only,1with hepatic artery chemoembolization and6without any treatment.5patients were failed to be followed up, among the15cases,2patients without any treatment were dead after the time of diagnosis at10months and15months respectively,1patient with hepatic artery chemoembolization was dead1year later after the initial treatment. The administration of surgical resection and imatinib were the important factors to prolong the survival after liver metastasis. Conclusion:The most common site of the metastasis is the liver and liver metastasis is the significant determinant of prognosis. Surgical resection and molecular therapy are effective treatments for patients with metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor.
