Objective:to investigate the expression of BMP-2(BMPS-2) and matrix metalloproteinases3(MMP-3) in the herniated lumbar intervertebral discs with Modic changes, and to explore their correlation with spontaneously absorption of the herniated disc.Methods:55cases of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation were included. According to exiting of Modic changes or not, patients were divided into Modic change group,20cases (6cases, I type, type II14cases) and no Modic change group,35cases. All surgical specimens were collected analyzed by HE, immunohistochemical stains including BMP-2and MMP3.Results:No Modic change group disc emerge organization for the average components: fiber ring37%, pulp nuclear55%, cartilage endplate in8%. Modic change group disc emerge organization for the average components:fiber ring33%, pulp nuclear19%, cartilage endplate in51%. Between two groups of cartilage and pulp nuclear component content are statistically significant difference (p<0.05), and two groups of fiber ring composition was not statistically different. Immunohistochemical stains showed that 90%of emerge organization can be seen in BMP-2(BMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinases3(MMP-3) in the emergence of lumbar intervertebral expression in the organization. But Modic change group BMP-2expression is obvious. The BMP-2/3MMP and immunohistochemical stains shows no Modic change MMP-3express group is obvious, BMP-2expression then less obvious. Modic change group MMP-3expression then is apparently little, BMP-2expression then is obvious (p<0.05).Conciusions:The group with Modic changes contains more cartilage component, and the ratio of BMP2/MMP3also is stronger than that of the group without Modic changes, indicating that Modic changes can play some roles in the process of spontaneous absorption of the herniated disc.
