The most of Fabaceae species have impermeable seed coats that impose physical exogenous dormancy in seeds. The dormancy level and regulation of dormancy release in natural condition are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. The effects of different conditions on seed physical dormancy release of two populations of Sophora alopecuroides L. in the field were studied in this research. The seeds of two populations were collected from the arid and humid environments in Alashan, Inner Mongolia named dry and wet population, respectively. The seeds then were buried in 3 field sites:Ejina county of Inner Mongolia, Zuo county of Inner Mongolia and Yuzhong county of Gansu province; with 0 and 5 cm burial depthes for a 18-month period. The results showed that:1 Population、burial time、burial place and burial depth had significant effects on seed physical dormancy release in natural. The dormancy release rate was mainly affected by population and burial time which accounted for 29.7% and 20.4% of total variance, separetely.2 Seed dormancy release rate was significantly different between two populations. The seed dormancy release rates of moist population is higher than those of dry population except for seeds were buried in 5 cm depth of underground in Yuzhong. Seed dormancy percentage of moist population was 37% after 4 months’ burial, while for dry population that was 70%.3 In the burial period, the seed dormancy release showed a significant dormancy cycle phenomenon. But the cycle degree varied with burial conditions.4 Burial depth influenced the release of seed dormancy, the hightest dormancy release rate was observed in seeds buried in 5 cm depth for dry population seeds buried in Zuo County and Yuzhong. In other cases, seeds buried on soil surface had higher dormancy release rate than those buried in 5 cm depth. Burial place had significant effects on seed dormancy release, the seed dormancy release rate was Yuzhong>Zuo county>Ejina County.
