Since the oil crisis, the energy issue has been a hot research. The energy-saving technologies for ship also get a lot of attention. Using the shaft generator to supply for the whole ship power system in normal navigation is an effective way to save energy. In this paper, we do a research for the working principle, modeling and make a simulation for some aspects of the system by using the MATLAB software.The paper includes the brief introduction of advantages and disadvantages, classification and research status of the shaft generator at home and abroad. And it also makes detailed analysis of the control principle for Siemens thyristor shaft generator. The models of shaft generator and its excitation system, synchronous compensator and its regulator, rectifier and inverter are established based on the laboratory Siemens shaft generator physical simulation system, after doing a research for the mathematical model of synchronous motor and circuit drawings. Models are connected together to form an overall system according to the control principle.Shaft generator is dragged by the main diesel engine, so it is impossible to adjust the speed of the prime mover. The changing speed results the control principle for the shaft generator different from the common ones. The shaft generator supplies to the grid of ship through the rectifier and inverter. The grid voltage and the reactive power mainly depend on synchronous compensator and its regulator, while the active power mainly depends on the shaft generator excitation regulator subsystem and the inverter angle control subsystem. As the control is particular, the paper makes a deep research for the excitation control subsystem and the inverter angle control subsystem by using the circuit drawings. The PI control makes the system work well.After debugging of the whole system, it works well. The output waveform obtained by the simulation corresponds to the system control principle and the data collected are closed to the data of the physical simulation system.
