The shaft generator is the power supply device which is driven by the main shaft in the ship. During the last years, the electrical power demand for marine application has increased heavily and the fuel consumption increased continuously as well. However, increasing cost of electric energy production resulting from increasing fuel prices is conductive to searching for alternative solutions of ship electric power plant. That leads to the application of main shaft generator to ships has become more and more popular in order to save fuel consumption. But the conventional shaft generator system has some disadvantages during its running. For example, operating and maintenance cost is more expensive; maintenance work is complex and it cannot connect to ship electrical network solely for long time. A novel shaft generator system is introduced based on SPWM inverter in this thesis. Moreover, a new ship power manage system is developed in cooperation with Schneider company. The shaft generator system based on SPWM inverter can satisfy the control requirement of the generator in Power Manage System. It can act as one of the main sources of the total load in the ship. And it is able to operate independently or parallel with diesel generators in the peaceful ocean situation so as to supply power to the electric network.In the first two chapters, a general description is made for the developing situation of traditional shaft generator system and principle of it. With these theories, a shaft generator system based on SPWM inverter is introduced. Its principles and structure is briefly depicted.In the chapter three and chapter four, the design of dismiss of the inverting part in the new shaft generator system is described in detail. In order to control the output active power and reactive power respectively, a module of three phase voltage inverter in the shaft generator system is built and its dismissing design is finished. In the chapter five, a software simulation for this module is accomplished using Matlab/Simulink.In the last, a brief introduction of Power Manage System (PMS) is made.
