The stiffness of the mill is the key parameter for the rolling mill control, and the amount offlattening between rollers is an important manifestation of the composite stiffness. So the amountof flattening between rollers is playing a vital role in improving the control of strip gap and shape, and the quantity of plate shape. In this paper, the main works which are around the stresses inrollers and the amount of roll flattening between rollers for four-high mills are as following:1) The Hertz’s contact theory and elastic foundation beam theory are employed to analysisthe contact force between rolls along the flattening width, and then solve the contact forcebetween rolls by using elastic foundation beam theory.2) The model is established to calculate the amount of flattening between rollers. Firstly, byuse of the model of a concentrated point force act on the surface of elastic quarter-space to solvethe normal displacement, and by means of the principle of superposition of small deformationand the Castigliano’s theorem to solve the normal displacement of distributed load acting on thesurface of the elastic quarter-space; Then it is sued for calculating the amount of flatteningbetween rollers; Finally, compare the calculated results with the F ppl formula results and theresults of the experiment done by JM de Mul and H. van Engelenburg. The conclusion is got thatthe amount of flattening between rolls calculated by the formula in this paper is closer than theresult of F ppl formula to the experimental data.3) The relationship between the contact force between rollers and the amount of flattening isanalyzed. Through the calculation model of the amount of flattening between rolls and themodels of two cylinders contact, the equation of the contact force between rollers and the amountof flattening is deduced. Then analyze the relationship between the flattening coefficient and theradius of the roll.
