Contemporary Television Culture

Electronic media has influenced and changed the whole society profoundly, as a totally new type of culture, media culture has constructed people's daily life experiences even the ideology, shaped all kinds of views, restricted people's values and emotional appeal. And in the regulation of the market principles, under the stimulation of new technology, media culture has been fighting for general audience who are non-personalized.Over the past decade, more and more ordinary people have appeared on the TV screen, and the proliferation of various types of reality TV shows has draw our attention, which has showed a strong demand to "celebrity" the ordinary people. Watching and participating in television programs become the important part of people's lives, even ordinary people themselves become the TV content. The series of phenomena show the "culture turner" of today's media.This paper chooses the "Cultural Studies" as the direction, the "culture turner" as a paradigm, focuses on the television culture, trying to find the cultural phenomena which can not only show the "culture turner" of contemporary culture but can also be related with television media, what's more, trying to take the hot reality TV show into consideration, finally trying to understand the current media culture, particularly the relations of media and culture embodied in the new characterization of the television culture.The first chapter introduces theoretical concepts and defines the perspective; The second chapter analyzes the characteristics of the "demotic turn", combined with the reality TV shows; The third chapter focuses on the analysis cultural phenomenon of "xuriyanggagn", to discuss the substance of the "demotic turn"; the fourth chapter is to explore for the potential structure of popular culture and the new social features. Ultimately, the paper put forward a wake-up call of the substantive results of the"demotic turn"--pproval of the positive functions of the popular culture, which including not only the cultural transmission, and also the function of art appreciation, as well as the function of political aspirations, however, to some extent, a superficial wide range of "ordinary participation" does not necessarily bring the real institutional democratic.
