Video image processing systems of early stages are mainly based on analog systems, whose technology is well-developed as well as a low cost, but analog systems also have some shortcomings such as the short distance of transmission, the weak ability of anti-jamming, the inconvenience in storage and the difficulties in transforming into digital signal. It is becoming common to process images digitally rather than analogically.The digital image process systems nowadays usually adopt DSP(Digital Signal Processor) as its central processing unit. With its serial performance, DSP is suitable for complicated arithmetic, but it can not reach the requirements to do the real-time processing in high speed signal processing because of its limited processing speed and poor reliabilities. Compared with DSP, the FPGA(Filed Programmable Gate Array) enjoys advantages in speed when doing the real-time image processing. Due to its inner structure and the easy distributed algorithm structure, it is easier for all parts to work simultaneously and more suitable for high speed digital signal processing. The SOPC technology makes it possible to integrate a large and complete circuit system in just one piece of FPGA, which optimizes the circuit designed in many aspects such as the scale, the reliability, the development cost, the product maintenance, and the hardware upgrading, etc.The video image processing system designed in this paper will realize the functions of gathering, transmitting, decoding, filtering, optimizing and displaying video images. This video image processing system employs CCD camera to gather video images, and then converts and decodes the analog signals sent back in PAL TV system to YUV digital signals. After the converting of interlaced scanning to successive scanning and the processing of digital filtering, the quality of the video image will be optimized. Finally, the processed digital signal is converted back to analog signal and displayed on the VGA monitor. This paper discusses neighbor average filtering, low-pass filtering and median filtering in details. After discussion, this paper adopts the improved median filtering to boom up the processing speed and better the effect. The video image processing system based on SOPC technology has the advantages of high processing speed, high reliability, high density of integration and easy upgrading. It will play an important part in aerial photographing for military or civil use.
