In the paper, we bring forward a new scheme of image collection and processing by analyzing and comparing the features of various kinds of image collection and processing systems, in which, FPGA embedded Nios core is used as a center processor. The design method of the hardware circuit is described in detail. Then we analyze the design method of FPGA and SOPC, the image sensor OV7620 is controlled by VHDL programs. Whereafter, image datas are gathered from OV7620, saved in SRAM and displayed in monitor. Beside these, we compare and optimize the digital image filtering method, and implement fast median filter algorithm in FPGA. Finally, by using SOPC Builder tool, we build and configure Nios core and its peripheral equipments, so the hardcore circuit and relevant software development kit are created. After finishing hardware design, pattern recognition program is compiled by C++, which includes image binarization, image segmentation, feature extraction and minimum-distance calculation, etc. The results of experiment show that the system can recognize the figure and number of playing card effectively.
