Nowadays, the Internet is expanding at an alarming speed while the amount of devices accessing the network grows exponentially, which results in the lack of network address. The development of application of IP technology is limited ever since. DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) can only alleviate the constraints of resource of IPv4 address, which cannot get the problem done and forever So IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) worked out a new version of IP address---IPv6. Compared with IPv4, the most essential improvement of IPv6 is its unlimited address space with the length of address expanding from 32 bits to 128bits. However, it's impossible for a network administrator to remember such a long address. In order to allocate and manage IPv6 address better, it's vital and helpful to study DHCP based on IPv6.This paper has a detailed description of DHCPv6 protocol, which includes basic theory of the protocol and a variety of typical networking architectures which contains DHCPv6 server and DHCPv6 relay agent. At the same time, the paper gives a glimpse at the original platform that lacks related functions of our project partner and stresses the necessity of re-design and develop of the core function of DHCPv6. On this basis, the paper has specified the function requirement and the overall system design according to relevant protocol and market demand including task model of event handling, public thread model, model of data synchronization and process switching, and related design solution of DHCPv6. Then the paper expounds on the configuration management module of the project which includes the realization of interaction of configured message and the design of the format of configured message and a comparison between configuration save/recovery of binary and string with a design solution. Finally, the paper has a description of the system acceptance testing of the project, including basic testing solution and related networking architecture. Besides, there is a summary and analysis of the problems that were found while testing. The final testing result shows that the property of the DHCPv6 project is in full compliance with related international standards. The result agrees to the targets of the project partner. The product based on the project will have a strong competitiveness when entering the market.
