Shakespeare's plays are regarded as the classic literature over the world, for its deep thoughts, noble theme, rich language and readers'high praise. However in Shakespeare's "refine" plays, there have considerable amounts of "bawdy". They all misfit its name of "refinement", and also make Shakespeare wander in argument of whether his plays are refine or popular for many years. In order to identify if Shakespeare's plays are Refine or Popular, we should start with "bawdy" to analyze the roles, the functions, the actions that bawdy taking on, and make these conclusions as an important basis for re-evaluating Shakespeare.Similarly, in the process of translation, there also has the argument of whether reserve bawdy or not. According to Liang Shiqiu, he insisted that Shakespeare was like this, so we should reserve that; but Zhu Shenghao believed that the most important thing of translation is to transmit its spirit and charm, so he sheltered and deleted those bawdy. Liang Shiqiu and Zhu Shenghao's two versions are both important achievements of Chinese translation process, but they held different point of views in bawdy. Then, which one is better? Which one convey the marrow of Shakespeare's plays? This must be solved from traditional Chinese ideas on refinement and popularity and Liang Shiqiu, Zhu Shenghao's translation concept. This essay studied the traditional Chinese concept of refinement and popularity with Chinese drama Peony Pavilion, and divided refinement into "Xiao Ya" and "Da Ya"."Da Ya" could transmit positive power, so bawdy in "Da Ya" are contribute for its spreading and expressing. The plays which suit both refined and popular taste means they pay close attention to life, society and eternal. And they could attract most people around the world. The plays that suit both refined and popular can become classic works.Making readers get knowledge from small things, insisting reality, reading comfortable, and suiting both elder and young,—are Shakespeare's plays and other literatures'essence.
