Objective:To explore the usability of Implementing Best Practice Knowledge Gateway (IBP-KG) mandarin version and its possibility of conducting online nursing research.Subjects and MethodsSubjects:Purposive sampling was adopted to include nursing educators, clinical nursing staffs who had worked for over 3 years and had certain English skills, nursing graduates and information workers whose working experience weren't restricted. Methods:Combined quantitative and qualitative research design was applied. This study was guided by system usability theory, followed by Black-box Testing's principles and methods, based on IBP-KG, with "IBP-SUS" and "ICN disaster nursing competency items" as cases. Nursing staffs were invited to participate in survey and focus discussion. Steps include:1 Preparation. After systematic literature review, knowledge about online research, system testing and usability theory were understood. Related cases and tools were prepared, and informed content were acquired from relative organizations and persons. Targeted subjects were also selected at this stage.2 Conducting. "Roles of nurses in disaster" Community was set up and approved on IBP-KG. Files including "Research Guidance", "IBP-SUS" and "ICN disaster nursing competency items" were uploaded. Subjects were invited, and then operation guidance and IBP-KG invitation were sent to those who agreed to participate in. Data were collected periodically. Formal study was conducted after pilot study.3 Analysis. All the data were analyzed by SPSS 16.0. Statistical methods such as Cronbach'αcoefficient analysis and description analysis, were adopted. Content analysis was conducted for open questions and discussions.Results:35 staffs were invited,16 participated in this study. All the 16 subjects, from 7 different provinces, finished IBP-SUS, while only 10 involved in focus discussion.14 were females and 2 were males. The average age was 37.06±9.52 years. Average working years were 14.03±10.53, except for 2 graduates, this figure was 16.04±9.66.Cronbach's a coefficient of IBP-SUS was 0.76, usability scale was 65.16±12.99. "Unnecessarily complexity" and "Needing the support of a technical person to be able to use this system" scored at a low level. Suggestions showed that incomplete function models, unclear navigation, small interface show, uncommon used language, mixed version of English and Mandarin, undesirable interactive effect, and lack of user guidance were the shortage of the current IBP-KG.All participants thought it possible to reduce the items of "ICN disaster nursing competency" with IBP-KG, and main methods provided were survey led by a researcher and group research.Conclusion:IBP-KG can be used to conduct online research, and the usability of mandarin version is reliable. But its functions, navigations, interface show, language and interactive effects need to be improved. Researchers can further study of reducing "ICN disaster nursing competency" items with IBP-KG, adopting researcher-focused survey or group research methods. However researcher should pay great attention to the quality of data.
