Asparagus old stem was used as main ingredient of medium to cultivate the mushrooms Pleurotus abalonus and Pleurotus geesteranus. The influence of different media on yield, biological efficiency antioxidant activity and polysaccharide content of fruitbody of these mushrooms was studied.PDA peptone medium, PDA peptone vitamin medium, PDA cornmeal medium and PDA peptone comprehensive medium were prepared respectively by adding carbon source, nitrogen source, inorganic salt and vitamins in PDA medium. Pleurotus abalonus and Pleurotus geesteranus were cultured in these media and their growth characteristics such as colony edge, density, color, growth rate and growth potential were compared. The results showed that in PDA peptone comprehensive medium, the colony edge, density, color, growth rate and growth potential of strains BH and BS of Pleurotus abalonus were the best, but there was not black stergmata. In PDA medium, the growth of strains BH and BS was inferior by compared with other media. Addtion of carbon source, nitrogen source, inorganic salt and vitamins into medium had not obsious effection on the growth of strains C and D of Pleurotus geesteranus. In a word, there were no obsious difference in growth between strains BH and BS, and strain C was better than starin D.Pleurotus abalonus and Pleurotus geesteranus were cultivated usually using cottonseed hull as the main substrate. In this experiment, old stem of asparagus was used as main ingredient of medium, cottonseed hull, bran, cornmeal and soybean cake were used as auxiliary components. The results showed that old stem of asparagus as main ingredient of medium, no matter additives of auxiliary components, could result in the improvement of mushroom yield of strains C and D. However, old stem of asparagus could not result in the improvement of mushroom yield of strains BH and BS. Addtion of cottonseed hull and bran in medium could result in the improvement of mushroom yield of strains BH and BS.Carbon sources (i.e. glucose, maltose, lactose, sucrose and starch) and inorganic salts (i.e. MgSO4 and KH2PO4) were added into the old stem of asparagus medium. The results showed that addition of carbon sources and inorganic salts could not increase the polysaccharide content of Pleurotus abalones fruitbody, but could increase the polysaccharide content of Pleurotus geesteranus fruitbody. Extraction rate of antioxidant content of strain BS was enhanced by adding MgSO4 in medium, Antioxidant properties of strain BH could be increased by adding MgSO4 and lactose in the medium. Addtion of MgSO4 and lactose in medium could reduce the extraction rate of antioxidant content of Pleurotus geesteranus, but increase the reducing power. Addtion of MgSO4 and sucrose in medium could increase the DPPH radical scavenging activity of Pleurotus geesteranus.
