Support System Design, Web-based Editing Performance

The Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) is one of the new forms of non-instructional performance support systems. It appeared in the later 1980s, and developed quickly, with more and more attention paid by different fields, such as organization development, human resource development, performance technology and training. The design and development of EPSS is not only a hot topic of performance technology, but also a new area of educational technology research. So far, the few researches about EPSS at home mainly focus themselves on theory introduction,let alone practical research.Based on the performance support theory, this paper gives a brief introduction of the characters and forms of performance support systems, and makes a review of the EPSS theory and practice at home and abroad. Then, incorporates with instructional systems design, performance centered design and knowledge management, the paper gives out a Web-based Electronic Performance Support System (WEPSS) definition, and constructs a design and development model and prototype design flowchart. After a series of intensive investigations, we have designed and developed a "Web-Based Editorial Performance Support System" according to the model and flowchart, in order to solve the problems in editors' work. We have made a trial at S Press, and have found out the problems of this prototype and further study topics.The "Web-based editorial performance support system"can promote the transfer of editorial training to job and the sharing of individual and organizational knowledge. Editors can both learn and work by using this support system. Meanwhile, this system can be applied in other industries as training platform and knowledge bank.This research provides an example for researchers, trainers and system developers.
