With the development of Information industry, the requirement for information resources has been switched from text and image to audio and video, with much more requirements on real-time and interactivity in the process of retrieving multimedia resource. With such advantages as little startup delay and small storage occupation on client, streaming media has become the customers' first preference. So streaming media applications based on IP network gained rapid development throughout the world. As the result of the combination of broadcast network and IP network, Set-top-box (STB) has become a multi-function terminal with audio/video playing, information processing and bi-directional network communication. Much more process will absolutely be made on the road of digital conversation. The biggest expectation function to STB is Video on demand (VOD). And the implementation of VOD is based on streaming media technology. This paper is based on the actuality of network and STB with the analysis of the mechanism and principle of current implementation of streaming protocols, and the problem of streaming media. Some research is made on a new type of transport protocol that is suitable for streaming and the implementation of the streaming media client terminal on embedded system. Here is the major content of the paper:1) Principle of Streaming Media technology. The mechanism of current application transport protocol RTP/RTCP is analyzed, and also the transport control protocol RTSP. The principle of their interactivity is also investigated.2) Research on new transport layer protocol DCCP. We simulate to verify the performance of DCCP compared with TCP.3) Implementation of VOD function based on embedded system, and simulation of DCCP transmitting real-time media. This is the foundation for the implementation of streaming based on DCCP.
