Narrative Perspective

In recent years, the global fever of Reality TV, an emerging TV program form which combines the features of documentary, TV drama and game show, enjoys extraordinary audience rating in the West ever since it came out, bringing about great benefit to the program as well. Without any delay, it was introduced into China.Reality TV under specific Chinese cultural and economic environments hasn't turned mature though it has been growing for several years in China. As an emerging program form transplanted from abroad, Reality TV needs both localization and grasping its essence on the basis of learning the foreign prototype. Its narrative, which plays an important role for its communication, hasn't been familiarized and mastered by domestic TV programmers.This paper starts from the characteristics of Realitv TV mix documentary, TV drama and game show, and summarizes some of its narrative characteristics: converged and comprehensive conflicts; careful focus of characters; series/serial narrative; interactive narrative.On this basis, the paper divides narrative into histoire and discourse according to structuralism, and studies the Reality TV's histoire(narrating content) and discourse(expressing mode). The paper summarizes several major narrating components, compares features of various characteristics of different modes of narrators , discusses the narrating strategy of Reality TV from the dimension of discourse and analyzes by citing cases. The paper's last part put some considerable questions of Realitv TV's localization from aspects of narrative style and ideology of narrative.
