The kernel thought of modularization is to construct the module architecture by means of disassembly and assembly methods and to combine modules to form products or systems to satisfy the customers' individualized requirements. Based on the deep study on the theories and methods of modular design, the paper establishes the general flow of modular design. The main contents and results of this paper are outlined as follows:1. Based on the analysis of customers' requirements, the main parameters and chief functions of a product are determined. This paper researches the function decompose method, and solves the problem how to ascertain the bottom functions during the process of decompose. The paper proposes the method to express the function decompose result using function principle structure tree, and thus constructs the function structure model. Based on the function decompose, the paper synthetically takes into account the function pertinence, assembly pertinence, space pertinence, energy flow pertinence, material flow pertinence, signal flow pertinence and time pertinence, and puts forward the method of dividing the function modules according to the Pedigree Clustering Theory.2. The paper researches the general solving method of the function principles, and establishes the product's design catalogue. The function modules are achieved on the function principles and the design scheme of the product is formed. Based on the design scheme, the structural modules are resolved and all these structural modules form the structural modules architecture. This paper also discusses the methods to establish the module-base.3. Based on the study of module family and module family model, the product's configuration process and frame, which are based on the module family. The paper solves the problem how to map the product characteristics to the characteristics of module family, gains the configuration set using the method of similarity metric, and then proposes the module family product' configuration methods.4. This paper researches the aim determination, indexes design, weight confirmation, critera system and a method of modular design evaluation, and thus constructs the evaluation indexes hierarchy.Finally, this paper describes the implementation of the computer aided modular design system and the system's primary application effects.
