Went with VLSI and DSP technologies, embedded system has been a very important part of computer applications. Modern embedded system has great computing capacity and been used in most aspects of human lives: PDA, Mobile Phone, Set Top Box, Networks, Computer of Car, Security Systems, Medical Instruments, Audio/Video, Information Appliance, etc.Most embedded systems have their own OS. From 1992, Linux evolved a powerful and well designed modern operation system. Opening source, supported by many developers, strong kernel, multi-architecture, perfect networks and graphics, supporting thousands of devices and well documented, Linux has been a prefer OS for embedded systems.At the same time, ever growing Internet and AI in recent years have changed the minds of using computers, from pursuing high speed PC age to post PC age which integrated working, learning, living and entertainments on a single machine. But common desktops have tedious software, which caused lower performance, less security, hard to operate and high maintenance."Multi-function Networks Communication Terminal" is an embedded Linux implementation which integrated common applications on Internet, such as video phone, video conference, e-mail client, web browser and address book. This is a solution for information query and multimedia communication in office and home.This paper descripts key technologies, designing and implementations of "Multi-function Networks Communication Terminal". It has six chapters. The first chapter covers the background and target. The second chapter descripts hardware and software architecture, developing environment. The third discusses key technologies in embedded Linux, including OS choosing, developing procedure, downsizing kernel, storage consideration, customizing boot and shutdown, etc. Chapter 4 includes GUI in embedded Linux, and how to developing web browser, stream media player, e-mail client on it. The fifth chapter discusses principles, standards, protocols, key technologies and whole implementation of video phone and video conference. The last chapter concludes this project and points out to-do of the system."The Design and Research of Multi-function Networks Communication Terminal" is an application of IA by embedded Linux, and the design can be a good reference for other embedded Linux developing.
