The technology of virtual instrument is a milestone of instrument development. Among the virtual instrument, the VXI bus is a typical representative that exerts profound influence on the field of instruments. The VXI bus is used widely for applications ranging from test and measurement to industrial automation. The technology of VXI is introduced into China and became the national military criteria. With the excellent feature, the VXI bus has experienced tremendous growth and acceptance around the world.This paper is organized as follows:Chapter 1 contains an overview of the features of virtual instrument (VI) and VXI. The configuration that uses IEEE-13 94 to control a VXI system is introduced. Chapter 2 describes the Resource Manager application of message-based device 13 94-VXI controller and the mechanism of register-based device Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG). The key technology of interface circuit and Direct Digital synthesis in AWG module is discussed explicitly. Chapter 3 introduces Virtual Instrument Software Architecture software library that is independent of physical instruments interface. With the VISA callback function, developing a driver of VXI register-based device is illustrated. The first part of Chapter 4 introduces the features of LabWindows/CVI that is popular development tool in programming the application of the virtual instrument. The second part discusses the method of generating arbitrary waveform data on the base of driver in the CVI development environment.
