There are three standard positioning techniques in WCDMA system, namely Cell-ID, OTDOA-IPDL and A-GPS. Since OTDOA-IPDL can provide accurate location while the cost is comparatively low, it becomes the prevailing positioning technique in WCDMA system. In the first part of this thesis, the author analyzes and summarizes mobile positioning system, including architecture, procedures and basic principles. Moreover, application perspective of these three standard positioning methods in WCDMA system is predicted. The key techniques of positioning in WCDMA system are briefly analyzed. After strict analysis, OTDOA-IPDL is considered to be the most perspective positioning technique in WCDMA system.This thesis aims at designing a mobile positioning simulator to evaluate the OTDOA-IPDL technique. The simulator consists of four parts: signal transmission, channel model, signal measurement and location estimation. In this thesis, the author lays great stress on channel model. And key elements of channel modeling are small-scale fading and multi-path transmission model. Therefore the generating principles, statistical characteristics and simulation methods are intensively analyzed and discussed.At the end of this thesis, simulation test on OTDOA-IPDL technique is made. The results are compared with those of other companies. Finally, a conclusion is drawn on IPDL technique about its advantages and disadvantages.
