As one of the purchasing power, today’s corporate patrons have acquired significant, well-educated collections at an unprecedent speed and in the last few decades they have also demonstrated their importance by propelling artists’careers to new heights on the worldwide stage. Originated in the end of the 19th century the early 20th century, corporate collection reached the peak in the 80s, and became professional in the 21st century.Arguably amongst the most influential arbiters of contemporary art, corporate collections have become an established constituent of the art world, and as they adapt to the increasing pace of globalization, through refining and reorienting their collections and cultural programmes, their impact in both the primary and secondary markets becomes ever more apparent. With this brochure, AXA ART hope to let more people know about the collection we have set up since the 1980s, which presents the continuation of AXA ART’s focus on trends in corporate collecting, and our insistence in the practice of CSR to contribute to the growth and the understanding of art around the world. The foundation stone for the AXA collection was laid in the mid 1980s by one of its predecessor companies, the Cologne-based Nordstern Insurance. Initially, renowed curators made a series of acquisitions for the annual Nordstern art calendar, which is held in high esteem by art experts worldwide.Today, it comprises more than 3,500 artworks by approximately 1,200 artists from around the world, with a special focus on modern and contemporary art from the United States and Europe. Found at all of the company’s locations in Germany, in individual offices and conference rooms as well as in public-access areas such as corridors and foyers and as "art & architecture" projects, the collection focuses on paintings, sculptures, photographs, works on paper and prints from the 20th and 21st centuries. Now it is part of our business DNA-differentiates us from our competitors.
